The Museum Industriekultur Wuppertal has been a member of the nationwide working group "Places of the History of Democracy" since 2021. This means that we are now part of a national network whose aim is to promote awareness of the history of German democracy and freedom locally, regionally and throughout Germany and to encourage democratic participation and civil courage through this.
In cooperation with Beatrix Burghoff (Bergisches Kolleg Wuppertal) and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Heinrichs (Bergische Universität Wuppertal), a student project was launched in 2023 to identify, research and communicate places of the history of democracy in Wuppertal. Eight locations were selected as examples, where historical events relevant to Wuppertal's democratic history took place and/or places that convey the roots and development of our democracy. The project is being continued with funding from the "Stiftung Orte der deutschen Demokratiegeschichte". The goal is to continuously expand the list of places of democratic history in Wuppertal and to develop a "Route of Wuppertal's Democratic History" from it. A website will be created to showcase these places. In the second phase of the project, there will again be a series of events with numerous project partners. We will inform you promptly when the new programme for 2025 is finalised.
