Guided Tour Engels Garden

followed by a visit to the Engels House

The textile factory and factory colony of the Engels family was located in Barmer-Bruch - today's Engels Garden. Two town houses and two workers' houses as well as the nearby Unterbarmer Hauptkirche (main church), which was built by Friedrich Engels senior, have been preserved. Friedrich Engels spent his youth here, was educated in the pious spirit of his ancestors and gained social experience that was later of great use to him as an author of social reports, a philosopher and a politician.
The Engels Garden is marked by three monuments in honour to the "great son of the city" and "co-founder of scientific socialism". At the same time, they are testimonies to a thoroughly controversial culture of remembrance.

After the guided tour, you will discover the Engels House on your own with its permanent exhibition on the life and work of Friedrich Engels. The visit to the Engels House is included in the price.
