Modernisation Museum Industriekultur Wuppertal

As part of a comprehensive renovation and modernisation programme for the Engels House and the Museum of Early Industrialisation, the exhibition buildings of the Museum Industriekultur Wuppertal are being upgraded and renovated. In the meantime, a new permanent exhibition on the life and work of Friedrich Engels has been realised in the Engels House. The new permanent exhibition in the Museum of Early Industrialisation is currently being redesigned. Due to the gradual development of the museum over the past forty years, the historical parts of the building have grown solitarily. It is therefore necessary to bring the different historical parts of the building together under an overall concept in terms of exhibition content and construction and to connect them with a visitor centre.

Museum of Early Industrialisation

The permanent exhibition in the Museum of Early Industrialisation is to be realised as part of a comprehensive modernisation and renovation programme. Wuppertal will be shown as an early pioneer region of industrialisation on the European continent. The prerequisites, process and consequences of industrialisation (technical, economic, social and ecological) are the guiding themes of the new exhibition, which will trace the specific path of industrialisation in Wuppertal. The aim of the permanent exhibition is to convey Wuppertal's early industrialisation history in a broad historical context.

Visitors should be enabled to make connections to contemporary problems through historical reflection. In this way, the permanent exhibition performs an important bridging function, mediating between the past and the present and providing orientation knowledge for the future.  Some historical devices and machines are kept in working order and demonstrated to visitors to make their functioning comprehensible and understandable. This gives visitors a fascinating impression of the historical working methods and they can try their hand at it themselves. Due to the building's structure, a large part of the machines will be presented in a bundle on the ground floor of the remise. The permanent exhibition is sponsored by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland Gefördert an by the Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien aufgrund eines Beschlusses des Deutschen Bundestages.

On the ground floor of the Kannegiessersche Fabrik, a café/bistro with an attractive outdoor area and a museum shop will be available to visitors in the future. The reopening of the museum is planned for early 2025.

New visitor centre

The municipal building management Wuppertal (GMW) has presented a new design for the visitor centre of the Museum Industriekultur Wuppertal. The new design provides for simplifying the building structure in many places. For example, the foundation will be less complex, as the new building will not be built directly onto its historical neighbours and no complicated securing of the foundations will be necessary. Instead, the connecting building will be linked to the Engels House and the Museum of Early Industrialisation with the help of glazed walkways. It will also have three storeys on which the functionalities will be distributed. For example, the foyer is separated from the event area - which makes it possible for both to be used at the same time. "With its airy foyer, the building will have great transparency and offer views of the historic museum buildings," explains GMW architect Stefanie Hentrich. In terms of energy technology, the new entrance will be state-of-the-art: With intelligent, externally installed, transparent solar protection made of metal mesh, with a green roof and maximum energy efficiency. It will also be barrier-free in every respect - with a ramp, lift and a guidance system for the visually impaired.

Full functionality is expected to be available in March 2024.
